چکیده

Evanescent field profiles of whispering gallery ~WG! modes in a 1.6-mm-GaInAsP microdisk injection laser were investigated by scanning a nanoprobe near the periphery of a lasing microdisk. The increase in threshold current due to the light scattering by the probe and the corresponding decrease in laser light were observed experimentally. Two-dimensional images of the evanescent field, which agreed well with theoretical expectations, were obtained by the use of a Pt–Ir probe. The images indicate that the WG mode is strongly locked by the fourfold symmetry in the microdisk with center post claddings. This characteristic is favorable for the microdisk laser itself to be used as an active near-field probe. A lower contrast image obtained by the use of a tapered silica fiber probe suggests that the microdisk probe can be sensitive to both surface profiles and optical properties of the object. © 2000 American Institute of Physics. @S0003-6951~00!01737-X#

Dynamical localization in microdisk lasers.

We demonstrate the lasing action from a dynamically localized mode in a microdisk resonator with rough boundary. Although substantial boundary roughness and surface defects in our devices imply strong light scattering and destroy the regular whispering gallery modes, the destructive interference of the scattered light leads to the dynamical Anderson localization in the phase space of the system...

Chaotic microlasers Based on Dynamical Localization

We report the direct observation of lasing action from a dynamically localized mode in a microdisk resonator with rough boundary. In contrast to microlasers based on stable ray trajectories, the performance of our device is robust with respect to the boundary roughness and corresponding ray chaos, taking advantage of Anderson localization in angular momentum. The resonator design, although demo...

Monolayer excitonic laser

Two-dimensional van der Waals materials have opened a new paradigm for fundamental physics exploration and device applications because of their emerging physical properties. Unlike gapless graphene, monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) are two-dimensional semiconductors that undergo an indirect-to-direct bandgap transition1–5, creating new optical functionalities for next-generati...

Dynamics of GaAsÕAlGaAs microdisk lasers

Dynamic response of a GaAs/AlGaAs microdisk laser has been experimentally investigated using femtosecond optical pumping. Below the lasing threshold, the delay time of the emission pulse from the microdisk hardly changes with the pump power. Above the lasing threshold, the delay time is shortened dramatically, and it decreases with increasing the pump power. The theoretical simulation based on ...

Dark-field imaging as a noninvasive method for characterization of whispering gallery modes in microdisk cavities.

Whispering gallery mode microdisk cavities fabricated by direct laser writing are studied using dark-field imaging and spectroscopy in the visible spectral range. Dark-field imaging allows us to directly visualize the spatial intensity distribution of whispering gallery modes. We extract their azimuthal and radial mode indices from dark-field images, and find the axial mode number from the disp...
